I am not a big rapper fan though. I don't really get the art of it, although I appreciate that some people do and that for many then its a passion!
That is why this film was hard to get into.
Omarion Grandberry plays a young guy from the South Bronx who dreams of a music career, but is wound up in street crime that he cannot seem to escape from. His mother witnesses someone shooting at him and sends him off to live with his estranged father for a while. He is very unwilling to go at first, but quickly finds himself adjusting to his new life and his surroundings.
When he gets to his fathers home, then he finds that there is a ready-made step-family there waiting for him. His father is married with a son, who is around the same age as Rob (main character). The two step-brothers hit it off straight away and Rob also warms to his stepmom but he finds it hard to relate to his father and they fail to connect in the beginning.
One person that Rob does relate to is the love interest! She is Puerto Rican, Sexy and loves Rob's natural talent for rapping. Her name is C.C and our guy is utterly, completely smitten. C.C is a bit of a loose cannon though and gets herself into a bad situation with a music mogul who wants her for one thing...and one thing only....And its NOT her voice!
This film seemed to move quickly from one scene to the next, but the music and dance helped keep the film interesting. There were parts which dragged and it lacked SOMETHING....I could never really put my finger on what it lacked...but it did lack!
But....despite my negativity above then I still feel that it was well acted and directed. It wasn't a great film, but its definately worth a watch....especially if you liked Step Up and other similar dance/music films.
There is a bit of drama/action in the film too....all going on whilst funky dance/RnB music is played over the top!
One plus is that Omarion has one stunning white smile! - Kind of makes me want to smile back at him!
